ANDREA MOTIS TRIO

The Catalan “Norah Jones”!

Introduced to music at a very young age, Andrea Motis began playing the trumpet when she was just seven years old. At age 12, she joined the famous Sant Andreu Jazz Band in Barcelona under the direction of her mentor, the extraordinary Joan Chamorro.

In 2013, Andrea gave her first concert outside of Spain… at Fest Jazz! She enjoyed our festival so much that she returned in 2014 and 2016 with the 35 young musicians of the Sant Andreu Band, including Eva Fernandez and Rita Payes. The highly acclaimed performances of this extraordinary group remain etched in the memory of all who were lucky enough to attend.

It was in 2012, at the Barcelona Jazz Festival, that she was named Best New Artist. She then had the good fortune to be noticed and invited on stage by Quincy Jones himself. He congratulated her, saying, “She plays the trumpet like Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, the alto saxophone like Johnny Hodges, and sings like Billie Holiday!”

In fact, her audience quickly nicknamed her the “Catalan Norah Jones.” Since then, Andrea has become a global jazz star, performing from Japan to New York and playing with other big names such as Milton Nascimento, Omara Portuondo, and the Buena Vista Social Club, Esperanza Spalding, and Yo-Yo Ma. Andrea Motis’s journey is extraordinary.

As they say, “Today Châteauneuf-du-Faou, tomorrow the world!” It will be wonderful to see her again!
